Why dental problems start with plaque, not tartar

What most dog owners notice first is tartar and bad breath. But the problem begins earlier and invisibly. After a meal, a thin, soft film of bacteria settles on the teeth, called plaque. If it isn't removed, it calcifies within a few days into hard, yellowish tartar, which sticks so firmly that it can no longer be brushed off. Tartar irritates the gums, and the bacteria underneath can lead to gum inflammation (gingivitis) and eventually periodontitis, where the gums and bone around the tooth break down so the teeth loosen.

The point is practical: all effective dental care is about intervening at the plaque stage, while the coating is still soft. Once the tartar has formed, neither a toothbrush, a chew bone nor dental snacks can remove it. At that point, a professional dental cleaning at the vet, typically under anaesthesia, is the only solution. Daily effort is therefore not excessive fussiness, but what determines whether you can avoid that trip altogether.

How often should you brush your dog's teeth?

Daily is the ideal. Plaque begins to calcify within a few days, so if you only brush once a week, you won't manage to remove the coating before it turns into tartar. If you can't do it every day, several times a week is still far better than nothing, and a fixed routine, for example always in the evening, makes it easier to keep up.

Use a dog toothbrush or a finger toothbrush and a toothpaste made for dogs. Toothpaste for humans should never be used: it foams, is not meant to be swallowed, and often contains fluoride in certain amounts and sometimes the artificial sweetener xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Dog toothpaste is made to be swallowed and typically tastes of meat or similar, precisely so that the dog cooperates. Angle the brush slightly so it also reaches the gum line, where plaque gathers, and focus on the molars at the back, which often get the most coating. If you want the full procedure, you can read more in the article how to brush a dog's teeth.

How to get an adult dog used to toothbrushing

Many people give up because they try to brush an entire mouth from day one on a dog that has never tried it before. Build it up instead. Start by letting the dog lick a little dog toothpaste off your finger, so the taste becomes something positive. The next step is to let your finger glide over a couple of teeth while the dog chews on it. After that, you can introduce the brush on a few teeth at a time and expand a little each time, always followed by praise or a small reward.

If you're working with a puppy, you have an advantage: a dog that gets used to having its mouth touched when young takes the routine for granted for the rest of its life. Make it a natural part of everyday life early on, ideally while teething is happening, so that handling the mouth is already comfortable. You'll find food and accessories for the little ones in puppy & junior.

Dental chews as a daily supplement to the brush

Chew snacks are not a replacement for toothbrushing, but a good supplement, especially on the days when the brush doesn't get taken out. The effect comes from the mechanical chewing: when the dog gnaws, the surface scrapes across the tooth and helps loosen soft plaque before it has a chance to calcify. A snack with a shape and firmness that forces the dog to chew through it, rather than swallowing it in two bites, gives the most.

In this collection you'll find several varieties of dental chews. GRAIN-FREE CLASSIC DENTAL DELIGHTS is a grain-free basic variant, while GRAIN-FREE BEEF & GAME DENTAL DELIGHTS and GRAIN-FREE BEEF & RABBIT DENTAL DELIGHTS provide flavour variation with different meat sources, which is handy if your dog is picky or reacts to certain proteins. Remember that chew snacks contain calories and count towards the day's total food amount. You can read more about how many treats a dog may have in the article how many treats can a dog have.

Chew snacks with functional ingredients

Beyond the pure chewing effect, there are chew snacks where the ingredients are chosen to support the mouth and teeth. CHAMOMILE & SAGE TEETH DELIGHTS combine chamomile and sage, plants traditionally associated with a soothing effect on the oral mucosa. PROBIOTICS & CINNAMON TEETH DELIGHTS add probiotics, that is, beneficial microorganisms, along with cinnamon. COLLAGEN & CURCUMA TEETH DELIGHTS contain collagen and turmeric. You'll find the whole selection in TEETH DELIGHTS.

Consider these ingredients a plus on top of the chewing effect, not a cure. A chew snack cannot and should not treat an actual gum inflammation, and if you suspect an infection or dental problem, that belongs with the vet. But as a flavour-varied part of the daily routine, they give you the opportunity to switch between several types, so your dog doesn't get tired of the same one.

Why bad breath is rarely just bad breath

A slight meaty smell from the dog's mouth is normal. But marked, persistent bad breath is rarely just a cosmetic detail. It is most often the first clear sign that bacteria have taken hold under the gums, and that there is plaque, tartar or incipient inflammation in the mouth. The smell comes from the bacteria breaking down the tissue.

It is therefore worth taking bad breath seriously rather than masking it. If the breath persists, even after you've started brushing and giving chew snacks, or you see red, swollen gums, discoloured teeth, drooling, chewing on only one side or reluctance to eat hard food, the dog should be checked. Suddenly occurring, very strong breath can also be connected to something other than the mouth, for example digestion or kidneys, and also belongs with the vet.

Can you remove tartar from your dog at home?

No, not the tartar that has already formed. Online you can find scraping tools that resemble the vet's, but scraping tartar off an awake dog yourself is not advised. You can easily scratch the tooth enamel, damage the gums and push bacteria deeper down, and you still won't reach the crucial part, namely the coating below the gum line. An awake dog also won't hold still enough for it to be done safely.

Once there is visible, calcified tartar, the right path is a professional dental cleaning at the vet, typically under anaesthesia, where the area below the gums can also be cleaned and the teeth checked individually. What you can do at home is everything that comes before: daily toothbrushing and chew snacks that keep plaque down, so new tartar doesn't have a chance to form after the cleaning. The combination of professional cleaning when necessary and consistent daily prevention is what, in practice, keeps a dog's mouth healthy throughout its life.
